Entry for June 7, 2006

We played at a small church on the north side of Houston called Bethel Community Church. We did the special music during the Sunday morning service, then ate lunch with the folks, and did a concert in the afternoon. It was one of those days that starts out trying to mess with your attitude. Although the church is small, they have a stage full of musicians for their services. There are tambourines and maracas laying in the pews (these folks love their singing and music!). We could barely squeeze onto the stage for the special music because of the other instruments, amplifiers, microphones, etc. After lunch, when we were setting up for the concert, we couldn't get our main microphone to work without feeding back. Glen went out to the equipment trailer and brought in another microphone that would be OK, although not our preferred set up. We couldn't get that one to stop feeding back either. After too much time messing with them, Glen said never mind, and we moved up to the front row and played the way it used to be -- no amplification at all. We were worrying about how well people could hear us, but it wasn't a problem at all. The folks in the very back said they could hear every instrument and voice. I guess we tend to worry too much sometimes. After all, God created music, so He can do whatever He wants to do with it. In this case, he wanted everyone in the church to hear it. And by moving us into the congregation, I think He added some excitement for the church. I just don't understand why He doesn't do something about banjos.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, White Dove played at Salmon Lake Bluegrass Gospel Festival in Grapeland, Texas. Salmon Lake's a great place. There used to be a town in East Texas called Salmon Switch where Floyd Salmon grew up. Floyd owns the park and puts on the festivals there. The railroad by-passed the town and the town died. Floyd moved most of the town to his property and created his own town, along with a lake and a natural amphitheater with a stage. Floyd turned many of the buildings into cabins that he rents out. He also has hook-ups for over 100 RVs. It's a great place for a festival, with plenty of picking room, lots of trees, etc. White Dove resurrected a patriotic medley that we used to do, and the crowd loved it, standing and removing their hats. On Sunday night, we did the evening service at First Baptist Church of Grapeland. This is the third year we've done that. Ron was baptized in this church, and there are still a lot of folks there who remember him and his family.

While we were trying to think of a grand finale for one of our shows at the Salmon Lake Gospel Festival in Grapeland recently, we decided that Bill could do his "pretzel banjo player" act. But we couldn't talk him into it. Something about eating too much and pants being too tight. For the story of how this routine came about, check the "News" page.

We played at the Fire On The Strings Festival last weekend in Conroe, Texas and had a great time. The headliner bands were Blue Highway and Cadillac Sky. Great bands! And the Bay Area Bluegrass Association did a great job in putting the festival together, and Havens Landing RV Resort is a good place for it. We played on Thursday and Friday, so the rest of the weekend we had open for visiting and jamming. Since the festival ended on Saturday, we put out the word that we would be doing a Sunday morning gospel service at our camp. We had more than 50 people show up for it. We played, prayed, and listened to the Word. Ron brought a brief message from Philippians 4:8 -- "...whatever is true, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything is worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things."

At the Fire On The Strings festival, Ron got to spend some time leraning from and playing dobro with Rob Ickes. Rob is a 7-time winner of the IBMA Dobro Player of the Year award. Ron's wife, Linda, fed Rob and other members of Blue Highway some of her chicken and sausage gumbo, which helped get Ron in the door. White Dove always says when Linda stops cooking, Ron stops playing with the group.
